Briefing[]
Enemy Forces
During summer of 1987 the mujahideen increased their attacks all over the country. To support these efforts, an increased number of caravans delivered weapons and supplies across the border from Pakistan. These deliveries employed convoys of up to 300 pack animals, which would later break up into smaller groups of 15-20 animals or several light trucks as they cross the mountain passes to guerilla base camps. These groups were typically escorted by 30-40 dismounted rebels, with reconnaissance patrols and rear guards.
As response, in August the high command decided to increase the ambush activity of our troops in the border province of Paktia.
Friendly Forces
You have been assigned to command a group conducting ambushes in Yakpay pass. Your troops include a dismounted air assault platoon from your company, reinforced by a machinegun section from your company's weapons platoon, an AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher section and an engineer platoon. Operating in secret behind the enemy lines, you can't rely on any artillery or helicopter support during the mission.
Terrain and Weather
Yakpay pass is one of the few crossings in the mountains between Gardez and Khost, favored by guerilla caravans. Its winding path lies surrounded by steep, forested cliffs, with an occasional small village near the road. The weather is clear, dry and warm, with gentle northeastern wind.
Mission
The group is ordered to hunt for caravans between 6 and 11 of August, primarily at nights since the guerillas kept to the villages during daytime.
Commander's Intent
At evening hours of 6 August the group moved out for the ambush site, reaching it past midnight. After a day of waiting, the lookouts spotted a caravan of 5 light trucks moving towards a nearby village. That night, however, the rebels remained in a village, and the group moved further down the pass to a second ambush site.
Basic Plan
By midnight on 8 August the caravan was finally spotted resuming its journey. Your orders are to destroy all the caravan trucks, preventing them from escaping down the pass.
