Briefing[]

Enemy Forces

In the second half of 1985 the mujahideen suffered several major defeats in the central regions of Afghanistan, and many of their leaders moved their activities southward. It resulted in an increase of enemy shellings and ambushes in the province of Kandahar. The rebels felt themselves particularly comfortable near the southern border of the country, in the mountain range separating Afghanistan from Pakistan. One of their largest bases was located some 150 kilometers south of Kandahar in the Islam-Dara canyon. It consisted of several training camps and weapon storages, a hospital and a bakery. The command decided to eliminate this base by airlanding two battalions and sealing the exits from the canyon, then moving the main body to capture and destroy the enemy camps.

Friendly Forces

Your air assault company, reinforced with a sapper squad, AGS-17 section and a reconnaissance platoon, is to be on the first lift. Your helicopters are escorted by a wing of gunships ordered to provide you with aerial fire support.

Terrain and Weather

The canyon is located in the mountain range beyond the great desert covering most of Kandahar province. The terrain consists of rocky hills covered with sparse foliage. It is late november [sic], and the weather is cold and damp, with a medium eastern wind. The landing will begin at dusk.

Mission

On 18 November two air assault battalions are airlifted to the northern and southern exits from the canyon, in order to seal them and then support the insertion of the main body the following day.

Commander's Intent

The battalion operating on the northern canyon exit is ordered to airland near the dominant heights 2300 and 2387 and capture them, blocking the routes north.

Basic Plan

During the landing of the first lift the landing zone was attacked by the enemy forces holding the designated heights. Some of the helicopters were shot down. As a result, the insertion of the rest of the battalion is postponed and the forces that managed to land must capture heights on their own.
