Briefing

Enemy Forces

By the end of 1981 the rebels were particularly active in the province of Ghazni, harassing the vital highways from Ghazni to Kandahar and Kabul. The bands of various sizes, sometimes well above 50, armed with RPGs and heavy machineguns, routinely attacked convoys in the area.

Friendly Forces

Three platoons of your motorized rifle company, including the weapons platoon, are assigned to escort such a convoy of over 20 trucks, driving from Ghazni north to Kabul, then back to Ghazni. First leg of the route passed without incident, other than an unexpected delay for 4 hours in Kabul, leaving the would-be ambushers a plenty of time to access the convoy and plan an attack. You have a priority for the helicopter support.

Terrain and Weather

You are now moving through the green zone some hour and half of driving south of Kabul. There is a bridge guarded by Afghan army some 3 kilometers along the route. The canyon is somewhat hilly and densely forested. It is about noon, the weather is warm and clear, and northeastern wind gentle.

Mission

Despite the Afghan post nearby, the green zone offers ample opportunities for an ambush. You must safely lead the convoy trucks to the end of the canyon in time.

Commander's Intent

The ambushers can hide on either side of a highway, using dense foliage for cover. Every truck lost is a victory for the rebels, so protect them at all cost.

Basic Plan

It would be wise to dismount the riflemen to protect the flanks of both BMPs and the convoy trucks. There is a chance that highway is mined as well.
